Today I take pen in hand to write and ask you to Co-sponsor the Green New Deal for Public Housing Act, recently reintroduced.
This bill you may be aware, would finally address the catastrophic maintenance backlog in public housing — estimated between $90 billion and $170 billion — while creating good-paying union jobs and transitioning properties to zero carbon.
Over 1.5 million people, many with extremely low incomes, are counting on Congress to act, while safeguarding and upgrading the housing to keep up with our climate emergency and weather extremes.
Annual appropriations to the Public Housing Capital Fund have hovered around $3.4 billion — a fraction of what's needed.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration ended the Restore-Rebuild Initiative and proposed a budget that would reset the Faircloth Amendment limit to freeze new public housing construction entirely.
This bill pushes back against that by repealing the Faircloth Amendment and funding deep energy retrofits, ADA compliance, renewable energy, and community programs like childcare.
Public housing residents deserve safe, healthy homes. Support this bill.
Thank you.
