Work to Prevent the Next Tragedy

To: Sen. Cortez Masto, Rep. Amodei, Sen. Rosen

From: A verified voter in Reno, NV

September 15, 2025

I am writing as a concerned citizen to express my deep sorrow and alarm over the killing of Charlie Kirk during his speaking event at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. This act of political violence is horrifying, not only for the loss of life, but for what it reveals about the fragility of public discourse in the United States. When people are harmed, targeted, or killed for their speech, we threaten the foundations of democracy. Though we may disagree with the ideas someone holds, no disagreement justifies violence. I urge you, as my elected representative, to support and initiate action in at least the following areas: 1. Strengthen protections for free speech and public assembly Ensuring that individuals speaking at public events—or attending them—can do so safely without threat or fear is fundamental. Increased funding for security at large public gatherings, especially on college campuses, and coordination with law enforcement should be ensured. 2. Address political rhetoric and radicalization The suspect in this case is reported to have been increasingly radicalized by online content and ideology. Congress should consider legislation or oversight that addresses platforms providing radicalizing content, encourages responsible moderation, and better supports counter-radicalization programs. 3. Determine and address motives in political violence Investigations must fully explore all motives—ideological or otherwise—and ensure accountability. Where speech or ideology becomes incitement or leads to violence, there need to be clear legal frameworks for response without compromising free speech rights. 4. Promote civility, bipartisan leadership, and national healing Leaders from all sides should speak out firmly against any kind of political violence, not just when it’s ideologically aligned. Encouraging respectful discourse and reducing inflammatory language is not just ethical—it can save lives. 5. Evaluate and support mental health and threat reporting systems Many individuals who commit acts of violence have histories of distress, isolation, or mental health challenges. Strengthening programs that allow people close to someone to report worries safely, expanding access to mental health support, and improving early-warning systems should be priorities. I believe that you—and Congress broadly—have a responsibility to act decisively. It’s not enough to express condolences; we must work to prevent the next tragedy. Please use your influence to push for bipartisan legislation, oversight, and cultural change that protects free speech while safeguarding lives. Thank you for your attention. I trust you will use your office to make our nation safer and more just.
