Today I’m writing to urge your strong support for the Hands Off Our Social Security Act, (H.R. 4734) recently introduced by several Democratic lawmakers. This important legislation aims to safeguard the Social Security system that over 70 million Americans rely on for retirement and disability income. The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated. Social Security trustees have warned that the program's retirement trust fund could be depleted by 2033, potentially leading to automatic benefit reductions if Congress fails to act. This looming crisis demands immediate attention and proactive measures to protect this vital social safety net. The Hands Off Our Social Security Act also offers a comprehensive approach to preserving the integrity of the Social Security Administration (SSA) and its services. As you know, it would prevent unauthorized changes to benefits, block any attempts at privatization, enforce essential privacy protections, and maintain the accessibility of services through both phone and in-person options. Equally as important, the bill also addresses recent concerns about SSA staffing reductions and field office closures by requiring congressional approval for significant personnel cuts and mandating impact reports before any field office closures. As your constituent, I strongly believe that protecting Social Security is not just a matter of fiscal responsibility, but a moral imperative. Millions of Americans have paid into this system throughout their working lives with the expectation of security in their retirement or in case of disability. We must honor this social contract. While I understand that the current political landscape may present challenges for passing this legislation, I implore you to press for its consideration in committee and to advocate for broader Congressional attention to this critical issue. The future financial stability of millions of Americans hangs in the balance. Please support the Hands Off Our Social Security Act and work diligently to ensure that Social Security remains a robust and reliable program for generations to come.
