Opposition to Senate Bill 177 – Protect Public Health and Medical Freedom

To: Gov. Beshear, Sen. Berg, Rep. Stalker

From: A constituent in Louisville, KY

February 18

I am writing to strongly urge you to oppose Senate Bill 177, which seeks to prohibit any requirement of COVID-19, modified ribonucleic acid (modRNA), or messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccines for student enrollment, employment, and medical treatment, and further prohibits their administration to minors under the age of 18. While I respect the importance of individual medical choice, this bill dangerously undermines public health, parental rights, and medical science. Preventing schools, employers, and medical institutions from requiring proven vaccines sets a troubling precedent that weakens our collective ability to prevent disease outbreaks. It also strips parents of the ability to work with their child’s healthcare provider to make informed medical decisions in their best interest. Scientific and medical communities, including the CDC and FDA, have extensively studied the safety and efficacy of mRNA vaccines. They continue to be critical in protecting individuals—particularly children and vulnerable populations—from severe illness and long-term complications of COVID-19. Prohibiting access to these vaccines for minors not only contradicts the recommendations of medical experts but also puts them at unnecessary risk. Furthermore, restricting vaccine requirements could negatively impact public health preparedness in the future. Schools and workplaces have long benefited from vaccination policies that protect communities and allow society to function safely. This bill sets a harmful precedent that could extend beyond COVID-19, eroding trust in vaccines that have saved countless lives. I urge you to stand with science, protect public health, and allow parents, individuals, and businesses the freedom to make responsible choices without restrictive government overreach. Please vote against [Bill Number] and ensure that healthcare decisions remain guided by medical experts, not political ideology. Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope you will prioritize the well-being of our communities by rejecting this legislation.
