Investigate and Hold Accountable ICE Agent for Excessive Force in Durango
To: Sen. Cruz, Rep. Self, Sen. Cornyn
From: A constituent in Princeton, TX
October 30
I am deeply concerned about the recent incident in Durango, Colorado, where a federal agent allegedly used excessive force against a 57-year-old woman during a peaceful protest. This event, which occurred on Tuesday outside the ICE field office, demands immediate attention and action.
The details of this incident are deeply troubling. Franci Stagi, while exercising her First Amendment right to protest, was reportedly thrown to the ground by a federal agent. According to accounts, the agent knocked away Stagi's phone when she began recording, then grabbed her by the hair, put her in a chokehold, and pushed her over a grassy embankment. This level of force against a non-violent protester is unacceptable and potentially criminal.
I urge you to closely monitor and support the ongoing investigations by both the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the FBI. The CBI, at the request of Durango Police Chief Brice Current, is investigating whether the agent violated state criminal law. Their findings will be crucial in determining if criminal charges should be filed through the 6th Judicial District Attorney's Office.
It is imperative that ICE and all federal agencies operate within the bounds of the law and respect the constitutional rights of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status or political views. The use of excessive force not only violates individual rights but also erodes public trust in law enforcement and immigration agencies.
I request that you:
1. Advocate for a thorough and transparent investigation into this incident.
2. Push for appropriate disciplinary action and potential criminal charges if the investigations confirm wrongdoing.
3. Call for a review of ICE protocols regarding interactions with protesters and the use of force.
4. Support legislation that strengthens oversight of federal law enforcement agencies and protects the rights of protesters.
The outcome of this case will have significant implications for civil liberties and the relationship between federal agencies and the communities they serve. I look forward to your response detailing the steps you will take to address this serious matter and ensure that justice is served.
