An Open Letter
To: Gov. Newsom
From: A verified voter in Vallejo, CA
March 6, 2025
With the exception of about 6 years, I've always lived in California. I moved back here because this is my home, and I've always felt safe, comfortable, and seen here. I feel like I can breathe a bit more knowing I live in a state where equality for all is a major tenant, including compassion and support for LGBTQ+ folks.
That being said, heartbroken, disgusted, and confused were just some of the words to describe my feelings when I saw the news headline saying Governor Newsome doesn't support trans rights with sports. This goes against the leadership I've appreciated and valued for so long.
First of all, what a blatant disregard for trans rights, and support for such a vulnerable and scared population, especially now. And secondly, what an ignorant statement, based on little fact or valid concern. It is extremely harmful and up-ends my trust and belief that vulnerable folks can be cared for.
I've never doubted voting for you Governor Newsome. And, if there are other Democratic nominees, I will certainly be considering voting for them, especially if they don't hold transphobic beliefs.
