As a constituent from Plano, Texas, I am writing to express my strong opposition to Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs and the broader implications of allowing the executive branch unchecked power over trade.
These tariffs are not only economically reckless—risking inflation, retaliatory trade wars, and ultimately a recession—but they also represent a dangerous overreach of executive authority. Increasingly, major financial institutions are sounding the alarm on how this kind of policy could destabilize the economy.
Trade policy is clearly enumerated in the Constitution as a power of Congress, not the president. To cede this authority to one person undermines our system of checks and balances. This isn’t about party—it’s about protecting the integrity of our democratic institutions and ensuring that no president, Republican or Democrat, can bypass Congress to unilaterally reshape the global economy.
It’s time for Congress to put on its big boy pants and reassert its constitutional role in governing commerce. I urge you to take a public stand against these tariffs and work actively to curb the expansion of executive power over trade policy.
