I am writing to strongly oppose the Trump administration’s order to discharge up to 1,000 or more transgender service members. These Americans are trained, capable, and have served honorably.
Discharging them solely for their gender identity is discriminatory, unjust, and weakens our military readiness.
This directive ignores clear evidence. A 2016 RAND Corporation study commissioned by the Department of Defense found that allowing transgender people to serve openly would have a minimal impact on military readiness and healthcare costs. It also concluded that inclusive service policies do not harm cohesion or effectiveness—findings supported by U.S. allies with inclusive military policies.
To remove dedicated service members is a major betrayal of their sacrifice and commitment to our country. It sends a message that loyalty and performance mean less than prejudice. We do not strengthen our military by targeting patriots who simply want to serve.
I urge you to take immediate action to block this cruel and baseless policy. Stand up for every American who has stepped forward to defend our country, regardless of gender identity.
