An Open Letter

To: Sen. McCormick, Sen. Fetterman

From: A constituent in Langhorne, PA

August 3

As your constituent, I want to see you reject Todd Blanche's nomination to be Attorney General. The nomination represents one of the starkest conflicts of interest of the office to date, and Blanche is responsible for some of the most reprehensible politicizations of the DOJ in the nation's history. In terms of conflicts of interest: Even apart from the fact that Blanche appears to still think of himself as the president's attorney, installing a president's former defense attorney as the nation's top law enforcement officer erases the traditional line between the DOJ and the president's personal interests. More importantly, Blanche's politicization of the DOJ, and his already demonstrated willingness to weaponize it against anyone Trump views as a political enemy, is disqualifying. Reported emails show his office deploying allies to run high-profile investigations at the demand of the president, while firing over 200 prosecutors and agents who'd worked in the past on Trump-related cases. Blanche also moved to vacate the seditious conspiracy convictions of Proud Boys and Oath Keepers leaders, thus whitewashing treason. The IRS settlement is equally disqualifying. It is a sham settlement, as shown by Judge Kathleen Williams' ruling against it. Blanche used this sham first to create a $1.8 billion slush fund that would have rewarded criminals who attacked our government and, second, to draft an agreement that would bar the IRS from audits or enforcement actions related to any past (and already proven) or future tax violations by Donald Trump, his family, or his businesses. The nation would thus be prohibited from being made whole for past tax crimes by the Trumps and unable to defend itself against or even investigate any future Trump tax crimes. At a time when it is emerging that Capital One Bank has taken action against Trump and his businesses for money laundering, no Senator who takes seriously his oath of office can approve a nominee proposing that the country be unable to investigate or defend itself against similar fraud. PLEASE HONOR YOUR OATH, AND DO NOT CONFIRM TODD BLANCHE.
