Urgent Action Needed: Defend NeighborWorks America’s Independence
To: Gov. Whitmer
From: A constituent in Holland, MI
April 21
NeighborWorks America (NWA), a congressionally-chartered nonprofit, has been targeted by DOGE, resulting in the removal of several key board members. Currently, Travis Hill, acting Chairman of the FDIC, serves as the sole board member. NWA, independent from federal agencies, is primarily funded by annual appropriations directly from Congress. Its mission includes affordable housing development, homeowner creation, and community support.
Over the past decade, NWA has achieved remarkable results, including:
- 213,481 homeowners created.
- 140,133 rental homes constructed, acquired, or preserved.
- 13,943 homes developed for sale.
- Counseling and education for 1,382,638 customers.
- A 49% increase in rental homes managed from 2015-2024, now totaling 211,856.
In FY24, NWA:
- Managed 211,900 rental homes and developed 13,500 more.
- Preserved 12,800 homes and repaired 84,000.
- Created 16,300 homeowners.
- Provided 105,000 individuals with housing counseling.
Additionally, the NeighborWorks network facilitated 920 USDA mortgages worth $227 million and issued 16,300 professional training certificates.
This action threatens the organization's independence and ability to serve communities effectively. NWA has empowered rural America, improved financial capabilities, and created job opportunities, such as 48,900 jobs in FY24 alone.
It is imperative to stop DOGE's interference and protect NWA’s mission. Please act to ensure that no other federally independent organizations face similar disruptions.
