Reconsider dismissal of Mayor Adams' corruption charges

To: Sen. Cantwell, Rep. Larsen, Sen. Murray

February 23, 2025

The Department of Justice's decision to dismiss corruption charges against Mayor Eric Adams appears to be a result of pressure from President Trump, who has cultivated a relationship with the mayor. This move undermines the principle of equal treatment under the law, as Trump seeks to exempt allies and those who entrench his power from prosecution, while using the justice system to target perceived enemies. Trump has explicitly stated his intention to weaponize the Department of Justice against his opponents. By ordering federal prosecutors to drop the case against Adams without assessing the evidence, the DOJ has obstructed the pursuit of justice and accountability for alleged serious offenses like bribery, illegal campaign contributions, and exploiting public office for personal gain. This interference seems politically motivated to protect a Trump ally, rather than upholding the impartial rule of law. It sends a disturbing message that wealth, power, and allegiance to Trump can insulate individuals from facing legal consequences for wrongdoing.
