Please Speak Up Now — Our Democracy Is in Immediate Danger

To: Rep. Carter, Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz

From: A constituent in Leander, TX

January 29

I am begging you to speak up. I am pleading with you to do your job before it is too late. Please, make this stop! Our country is sliding—rapidly and unmistakably—into authoritarianism. What is happening right now is not normal. It is not politics as usual. It is not something we can debate later or “wait out.” This is a crisis. ICE is kidnapping people in broad daylight. People are disappearing into detention without due process. People are dying in custody, and no one is being held accountable. This is state violence, carried out with indifference and cruelty. The Department of Justice is openly refusing to follow court orders. The rule of law—the foundation of this country—is being treated as optional. When the executive branch ignores the courts, democracy is already in free fall. And now the Administration is quoting Nazi slogans. Not dog whistles. Not coincidences. Direct echoes of fascist ideology. This should chill every single one of you to the bone. No one is safe when the government decides the law no longer applies to itself. Not immigrants. Not journalists. Not political opponents. Not ordinary citizens. History has shown us exactly where this road leads, and it does not end peacefully. Your silence is not neutrality.Your silence is permission. We elected you to be a check on authoritarian power—not to look away while it grows. If Congress does not speak out now, loudly and clearly, then you are abandoning the Constitution you swore to defend. Please. Use your voice. Use your authority. Draw a line. Defend the courts. Defend civil rights. Rein in ICE. Condemn fascism without hedging or euphemism. This is wrong. This is dangerous. This must stop. If you do not act now, history will remember who stood up—and who stayed silent.
