23andMe, a leading consumer genetic testing company, has failed to put adequate safeguards in place to protect customers' highly sensitive DNA data from being sold or shared without explicit consent. As a result, there is a pressing need for stronger privacy regulations to prevent the unauthorized commercialization and exploitation of people's most personal information. Consumer genetic data should never be treated as a commodity to be bought and sold without oversight. Robust data privacy laws must be enacted to prohibit companies from profiting off individuals' DNA and genetic makeup without their knowledge and approval. We cannot allow corporations to prioritize profits over people's fundamental right to privacy when it comes to such intimate personal data. Decisive action is required to safeguard consumer genetic information and prevent its misuse.
