End the Government Shutdown

To: Sen. Grassley, Sen. Ernst, Rep. Nunn

From: A constituent in Des Moines, IA

October 4, 2025

I’m writing as a constituent who believes deeply in responsible government and the duty of public service. The ongoing shutdown is failing hardworking Americans who expect their leaders to protect the stability and integrity of this nation—not use it as a bargaining chip. Every day this shutdown continues, families lose paychecks, small businesses lose contracts, and communities lose faith in Washington. While Congress stalls, ordinary Americans carry the burden. That’s not strength—it’s neglect. When lawmakers take recess while the country struggles, it sends the message that leadership is out of touch and indifferent to the people it serves. True conservatism is about stewardship—managing the people’s business efficiently, living within our means, and keeping government functioning for those who rely on it. A shutdown wastes money, damages confidence, and weakens the very country we claim to defend. It’s time to get back to the table and negotiate in good faith. Working with others, including Democrats, isn’t surrender—it’s statesmanship. Americans expect their representatives to govern, not posture. Reopen the government, put politics aside, and prove that Congress still values country over party.
