Power of the purse? Guess not

To: Sen. Cruz, Sen. Cornyn, Rep. McCaul

From: A constituent in Bryan, TX

July 19

I am writing to express my deep disappointment that you have effectively surrendered Congress’s constitutional authority over federal spending to President Donald Trump. This is not just a political misstep — it is a dangerous erosion of the separation of powers that threatens the integrity of our democracy. Under the Constitution, the power of the purse belongs to Congress — not the president. By allowing President Trump to dictate funding decisions or hold appropriations hostage to political demands, you have undermined your own institution and the public trust placed in it. What is the purpose of having an Appropriations Committee if its authority is to be overridden by executive pressure? No president — regardless of party — should be allowed to bypass or dominate Congress when it comes to spending taxpayer dollars. Your role is not to serve the president’s political agenda, but to serve the people who elected you, and to act as an independent check on executive power. When Congress hands over its power to the president, especially one who has shown a willingness to govern by intimidation and revenge, it is not just a breach of protocol — it is a betrayal of your oath to uphold the Constitution. I urge you to reclaim your authority, defend the balance of powers, and put country before party. You were not elected to be spectators. You were elected to govern.
