I am writing to express my strong opposition to any deployment of the National Guard in Chicago. The recent success of the 2025 Bank of America Chicago Marathon on October 13 serves as a prime example of why such military presence is unnecessary and potentially harmful to our community.
The marathon demonstrated Chicago's ability to manage large-scale events effectively without resorting to military intervention. Over 50,000 participants from more than 120 countries and nearly 1.5 million spectators gathered peacefully, showcasing our city's capacity for hosting world-class events using existing resources and local law enforcement.
Deploying the National Guard in Chicago would be an overreach that risks intimidating and alienating our own citizens. It could create an atmosphere of fear and tension, potentially damaging Chicago's reputation as a welcoming, diverse city. Such action might deter visitors, harm local businesses, and undermine the very community spirit that makes Chicago strong.
The success of events like the Chicago Marathon proves that our city is capable of maintaining public safety without militarization. Local law enforcement, in coordination with community leaders and event organizers, has consistently demonstrated the ability to manage large gatherings effectively and peacefully.
I urge you to oppose any measures that would bring the National Guard into Chicago for domestic purposes. Instead, I ask that you support initiatives that enhance community policing, improve coordination between local agencies, and invest in infrastructure that naturally promotes public safety. These approaches are more effective, less intrusive, and more aligned with the values of our diverse and vibrant city.
Chicago's strength lies in its communities, not in the presence of military troops on our streets. Let's focus on policies that build trust, foster cooperation between citizens and law enforcement, and address the root causes of any safety concerns. By doing so, we can ensure that Chicago remains a city where all residents feel safe and respected without the need for military intervention.
