Urgent Constitutional Concerns Regarding President Trump’s Statements

To: Rep. Flood, Sen. Fischer, Sen. Ricketts

From: A constituent in Lincoln, NE

April 14

I am writing to express my deep concern about recent actions and statements made by President Donald Trump. After wrongfully deporting a man who was in the United States legally—and then openly defying a Supreme Court ruling ordering his return—President Trump is now suggesting that American citizens should be sent to prisons in El Salvador. This is not only alarming, it is a direct attack on the Constitution and the rule of law. The idea that U.S. citizens could be exiled or imprisoned abroad simply for political dissent is ethically abhorrent and constitutionally indefensible. It violates the most basic protections afforded to citizens of this country. At this point, there can be no doubt: these actions and proposals reflect a clear disregard for democratic principles and the foundational values of our nation. I urge you, as my elected representative, to speak out against these abuses of power and to take all possible steps to protect the rights and freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution. We have passed a critical tipping point. Silence is complicity.
