I am a mother, teacher, and proud member of my community in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I am extremely concerned about the cuts being made to federal departments over the past months and the way those cuts are being made. The onslaught of abrupt firings across places such as 10% of the National Science Foundation or thousands of workers at the USDA was a measure to create fast, "easy" results. But it causes harm to those workers and their families, and the money they would ordinarily contribute to our economy. It causes harm to those organizations that do good, meaningful work. Now, the USDA has admitted that they are desperate to hire back many of those people who they pushed out, because they held critical job roles. This is another indicator of how these cuts are happening without forethought, reason, or any concessions to long-term consequences. While it might seem like money is being saved in the moment, we are losing. We are losing ground in scientific achievement. We are losing ground in protecting our valuable national parks and being able to enjoy them. We are losing the people who keep our food and medicines safe. These widespread cuts of jobs -- mainly in organizations that President Trump deems less important by his personal agenda, not by the values of the American people -- need to stop. These people need to be restored at once to the duties they were faithfully doing for their country, often at salaries that did not match their efforts. They did it because they loved what they did. Please speak up against these measures that are hurting the heart of who America is, and who we could be in the future. We will lose the ability to hire and keep bright minds, who will not trust our government to keep its promises.
