I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the potential appointment of Elon Musk as co-chair of the proposed Department of Government Efficiency. Given Mr. Musk's extensive business interests and existing government contracts, his involvement in this capacity presents significant conflicts of interest that could undermine the integrity of our federal institutions.
Conflicts of Interest:
Tesla: As CEO of Tesla, Mr. Musk oversees a company that benefits from federal tax incentives and is subject to auto safety regulations. His role in a government efficiency department could influence policies directly affecting Tesla's operations.
SpaceX: SpaceX holds substantial contracts with NASA and the Department of Defense. Mr. Musk's government position could lead to preferential treatment or policy changes favoring SpaceX over competitors.
Neuralink and Other Ventures: Mr. Musk's ventures, such as Neuralink, are under federal scrutiny for various regulatory issues. His government role could potentially interfere with ongoing investigations or lead to regulatory leniency.
The Federal Advisory Committee Act mandates that advisory committees ensure their recommendations are free from bias and not influenced by special interests. Appointing Mr. Musk, whose enterprises intersect with numerous federal agencies, contravenes this principle and risks eroding public trust in our government's impartiality.
I urge you to oppose Mr. Musk's appointment to any governmental role where his business interests could conflict with public duties. Ensuring that our government operates without undue influence from private entities is paramount to maintaining democratic integrity.
I respectfully request a response outlining your position on this matter and the actions you plan to take to address these concerns.
Thank you for your attention to this critical issue.
