Washington's regressive tax system places an outsized burden on working families while allowing the ultra-wealthy to avoid paying their fair share. This is unacceptable and unsustainable. We cannot bridge our budget deficit by gutting vital social support programs that millions rely on. Instead, we must reform our upside-down tax code to finally require the wealthy few to pay what they owe. Implementing a capital gains tax on profits from selling assets like stocks and bonds is an obvious first step. The legislature should also explore an income tax on the highest earners to make our tax system more equitable. Working Washingtonians desperately need relief - it's time for the ultra-rich to start paying their fair share towards funding the public services we all depend on.
