Demand for Oversight into DOJ Targeting of the Southern Poverty Law Center

To: Rep. Beatty, Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted

From: A verified voter in Columbus, OH

May 5

I am writing to express my grave concern regarding the Department of Justice's recent 11-count indictment against the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). This prosecution represents a dangerous departure from the rule of law and appears to be a targeted attempt to use federal law enforcement to dismantle a prominent critic of the current administration. The following facts demonstrate why this use of the DOJ requires immediate congressional oversight: - Criminalization of Standard Oversight: The DOJ’s allegation that the SPLC "manufactured" extremism by paying informants is a direct attack on standard investigative journalism and civil rights monitoring. These field sources are a recognized method for tracking domestic threats—a tactic the FBI and other law enforcement have utilized for decades. - Abuse of Fraud Statutes: Charging a non-profit with wire fraud for its methodology of monitoring hate groups sets a perilous precedent. It suggests that the executive branch can now decide which types of research are legitimate and prosecute organizations whose findings are politically inconvenient. - Weaponization of the Justice System: On May 1, 2026, members of the House Judiciary Committee formally identified this prosecution as abusive and baseless. The timing of these charges, coupled with the administration's public hostility toward the SPLC, points to a clear disparate impact on organizations that provide independent checks on government power. When federal agencies are used to indict civil rights organizations based on their research methods, it signals a collapse of institutional neutrality. This is not a legitimate law and order action; it is the use of the judicial system to conduct a political vendetta. I demand that you: 1. Support the Congressional Inquiry into the DOJ’s decision to pursue these charges. 2. Demand accountability from the DOJ and FBI regarding the weaponization of fraud statutes against non-profit entities. 3. Publicly oppose any efforts to utilize the federal budget to target and silence civil rights watchdogs. The integrity of our justice system depends on its independence from executive whim. I look forward to seeing you take a stand for the rule of law.
