Democratic middleclass tax cuts aren’t it - social services need progressive tax
To: Sen. Schiff, Rep. Rivas, Sen. Padilla
From: A constituent in North Hollywood, CA
March 14
I am deeply skeptical that the tax cuts put forward by Democratic Senators and endorsed by Senator Schiff among others will be offset by taxes on the very wealthy, both in terms of the math and the of the political will of the present Democratic Party to enact/enforce progressive taxation (not to mention the Republicans). Additionally, tax cuts are Republican/conservative coded and historically have served to make the rich richer and gut the middle class, and “balancing the national debt” as mentioned in Sen. Kelly’s press release in particular is one of their favorite red herring talking points (one of my Economics professors said he’d be much more worried for China trying to recoup their money than for us actually having our debts called in much less collected).
The idea of no taxes for most people sounds appealing. But it’s at best pandering to people who don’t know better and at worst betraying them to those who do. Democrats simply need to be pushing for equitable taxation at the top end, that takes back what’s been siphoned by billionaires and corporate conglomerates through tax avoidance and past tax cuts passed by Republicans, and apply that to universal healthcare and the other social services standard in any other wealthy country.
