Oppose the SAVE Act - Protect Voting Access for All Constituents
To: Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla
From: A constituent in Carpinteria, CA
February 17
I am writing to urge you to oppose the SAVE Act, which is being presented as voter protection legislation but would actually suppress voter participation in our district. Despite its misleading name, this bill would create unnecessary barriers that prevent eligible citizens from exercising their constitutional right to vote.
The SAVE Act is designed to appear reasonable on its surface, but its true impact would be to disenfranchise thousands of legitimate voters. When legislation claims to solve a problem that extensive research shows does not exist at any meaningful scale, we must question the real motivation behind it. Study after study has demonstrated that voter fraud is extraordinarily rare in American elections, yet this bill would impose burdensome new requirements that would primarily affect elderly voters, young people, naturalized citizens, and those who have recently moved.
These are not abstract concerns. Real constituents in our community would face real obstacles to participating in democracy. A senior citizen who no longer drives, a college student voting in their first election, or a newly naturalized American who has fulfilled every legal requirement to become a citizen could all find themselves unable to vote because of arbitrary documentation requirements that serve no legitimate security purpose.
Our election systems already have robust safeguards in place. What we need is to make voting more accessible, not more difficult. When fewer people vote, our democracy becomes less representative and less responsive to the needs of all constituents.
I urge you to stand against the SAVE Act and instead support measures that expand voter access while maintaining election integrity. Our constituents deserve elected officials who will protect their fundamental right to vote rather than erect obstacles to participation. Please oppose this legislation and communicate your position publicly so voters understand where you stand on protecting their rights.
