Use U.S. Leverage and Free HANAN BARGHOUTI

To: Sen. Hickenlooper, Rep. Evans, Sen. Bennet

From: A constituent in Thornton, CO

March 11

I write as your constituent to urge you to demand the immediate, unconditional release of Palestinian political prisoners, who have been abducted, caged, and tortured by the Israeli apartheid state in violation of their rights and due process. The U.S.—as Israel’s largest military backer—has unique leverage to demand accountability and protect human rights. I call on you to do the following 4 things: 1. Demand the immediate release of political prisoner HANAN BARGHOUTI, also known as "Umm Anad”. Hanan was first detained in September 2023 without charge. After being released in a November 2023 prisoner exchange deal, her freedom lasted only four months. IN MARCH 2024, OCCUPATION FORCES RE-ARRESTED HER, PLACING HER BACK INTO ADMINISTRATIVE DETENTION INDEFINITELY. The arrest of Umm Anad and her detention without charge for a second time is how the occupation uses administrative detention as a policy of collective punishment against Palestinians. Administrative detention has become an easy alternative to court proceedings that target Palestinians who are relatives of prisoners or human rights defenders, specifically many who try to advocate against the ongoing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza or war crimes within occupation prisons. The occupation has expanded its use of administrative detention, particularly after October 7th, 2023, bringing the number of administrative detainees to over 3,000. Those imprisoned today under administrative detention are held for unknown periods and are deprived of lawyers. 2. Demand the immediate release of Hanan’s four children - Anad, Abdullah, Omar, and Islam, who are all currently detained administratively in occupation prisons. Umm Anad is also the sister of Nael Barghouti, who has been imprisoned for more than 44 years, and the sister of the late prisoner Omar Barghouti, "Abu Aasif," who spent more than 30 years in occupation prisons before his death. 3. Demand the immediate release of all Palestinian children and all Palestinian prisoners held in “administrative detention” without charge or trial. 4. Cut off the endless supply of U.S. weapons and military funding to Israel, as required by U.S. and international law. Support the Block the Bombs Act H.R. 3565 in the House and the introduction of companion legislation in the Senate. Failure to act makes the United States complicit in enabling Israel’s mass imprisonment, arbitrary detention, torture, and other human rights violations. I urge you to stand for justice and accountability.
