An Open Letter

To: Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla, Rep. Levin

From: A constituent in Carlsbad, CA

August 5, 2025

I respectfully urge you to oppose the SCREEN Act (S. 737 / H.R. 1623). This bill would mandate intrusive age‑verification systems, including biometric scans and ID uploads, that pose serious privacy and security risks. It also threatens free speech by including language that would allow Republicans to censor legal LGBTQ+ content and fan‑fiction archives under overly broad definitions of “harmful to minors”. For small platforms and non‑profits like archives and creative communities, compliance costs and liability also create a chilling effect on lawful speech. This is another step towards authoritarianism being pursued by the Trump regime and MAGA extremists. Vote AGAINST this legislation.
