We Need Democratic Leadership That Meets the Moment

To: Rep. Dean

From: A constituent in Norristown, PA

November 4

I am writing as your constituent to urge you not to automatically support Hakeem Jeffries for Speaker of the House. I want a genuine vote and an honest debate about who is best equipped to lead House Democrats. The speakership should not be a foregone conclusion or a coronation simply because someone already holds a leadership position. After Democrats’ recent electoral gains, we have an opportunity—and an obligation—to demonstrate that we understand what voters are demanding. This moment calls for bold, accountable leadership willing to challenge the status quo. I do not believe Hakeem Jeffries has demonstrated that he is the leader we need right now. His reliance on corporate PAC money raises legitimate questions about influence, access, and whose interests take priority. Contributions do not automatically dictate someone’s positions, but voters deserve leadership that is demonstrably accountable to working people, not beholden to corporate interests. Families are struggling with the cost of housing, groceries, health care, and everyday necessities. We need Democrats who will confront corporate greed, challenge entrenched interests, and deliver meaningful improvements in affordability. We cannot afford leadership that prioritizes protecting the political establishment over delivering the change voters demand. Jeffries does not meet this moment. We need more than a face for the opposition. We need a leader with a compelling vision, the courage to challenge powerful interests, and a strategy that translates electoral victories into tangible results for ordinary Americans. These priorities are not mutually exclusive. We can defend democracy, hold this administration accountable, and fight for working families simultaneously. We can walk and chew gum at the same time. Protecting democratic institutions cannot become an excuse for neglecting economic insecurity. Accountability must apply to both parties, including our own. If Democrats believe voters deserve accountability, that principle must begin within our own leadership. Electoral gains should not be interpreted as permission to maintain business as usual. I urge you to exercise your independent judgment, consider alternatives to Jeffries, and insist on a substantive vote rather than simply following the party establishment. Disagreement is not weakness; it is an opportunity to demonstrate that leadership must be earned. Our country needs a Democratic Party that puts people before corporate interests and delivers on affordability and accountability. Please make your vote count.
