I am writing to express my strong opposition to the current state budget bill under consideration. While I understand the importance of fiscal responsibility, I believe this budget disproportionately benefits the wealthy and undermines essential public services.
The proposed budget includes significant tax cuts for high-income earners and businesses, while imposing a 25% cap on school district carryover funds. This cap could result in a loss of up to $5 billion for public schools, forcing districts to make severe cuts to student programs and potentially leading to more frequent levy requests .
Additionally, the budget allocates $600 million in state-backed bonds for a new Browns stadium, a project that may cost taxpayers nearly $1 billion over 25 years. Despite claims that the stadium will generate economic benefits, research indicates that such projects often do not deliver the promised returns .
Furthermore, the budget proposes eliminating the Public Library Fund, which provides critical support to local libraries. This move could jeopardize essential community services and access to educational resources .
And the government has no business monitor citizens’ reproductive cycles or health history. We voted overwhelmingly to protect our right to abortion. Our representatives must respect that.
Our state deserves a budget that prioritizes education, public services, and respects the rights of all its citizens.
