War Powers violation: Venezuela strike without congressional authorization.
To: Sen. Cornyn, Rep. Carter, Sen. Cruz
From: A verified voter in Cedar Park, TX
January 3
The President initiated military action against Venezuela and, by his own public claims and subsequent reporting, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were seized and flown to the United States to face criminal proceedings.
If accurate, this is an extraordinary escalation and an abuse of power: initiating hostilities without congressional authorization or meaningful transparency, and carrying out the seizure of a foreign head of state and spouse.
Even people who despise Maduro should recognize the precedent this sets. When are we going to stop defending the indefensible just because it’s “our side” doing it?
Congress is not a spectator.
I am demanding immediate accountability and action:
State publicly whether Congress was notified in advance. If not, say plainly that this was unacceptable.
Demand urgent briefings and public oversight hearings, with sworn testimony from the White House, Pentagon, State Department, and DOJ: the legal authority claimed, objectives, civilian harm, risks of retaliation, and any plan to prevent escalation.
Enforce War Powers limits and move binding legislation to end unauthorized hostilities and prevent further action, including funding restrictions if needed.
Support an impeachment inquiry and articles of impeachment if the President initiated hostilities without lawful authorization, misled Congress, or otherwise abused executive power.
This cannot become another blank-check conflict disguised as “law enforcement” or “national security.” Do your job. Reassert Congress’s authority, stop this escalation, and ensure real consequences for unlawful action.
