Reject unconstitutional proposal to deport U.S. citizen convicts

To: Sen. Hawley, Rep. Bell, Sen. Schmitt

From: A constituent in Saint Louis, MO

April 17

The proposal to deport U.S. citizens convicted of violent crimes raises grave constitutional concerns and sets a disturbing precedent that threatens fundamental rights. It is a bedrock principle that citizens cannot be deported or expelled from their country of citizenship, regardless of criminal convictions. Deporting U.S. citizens would violate the Fourteenth Amendment's guarantee of due process and the Eighth Amendment's prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment. Sending Americans to prisons in El Salvador, where human rights abuses are rampant, is unconscionable and unconstitutional. This proposal erodes the inviolable rights of citizenship and opens the door to further abuses of presidential power. I urge you to reject any effort to strip citizenship or deport U.S. citizens, as it gravely undermines core constitutional protections and human rights norms. Explore alternative sentencing within the U.S. justice system that respects due process and human dignity.
