I am writing to express my concern about the recent cuts to HUD funding, which threaten essential programs like Service Coordination and affordable housing for low-income seniors. At National Church Residences, where I have worked for over 12 years, we see firsthand how critical these programs are for seniors, Veterans, and vulnerable populations. Service Coordination programs connect older adults with healthcare, nutrition, and social services, helping them remain independent and reducing costly hospitalizations or nursing home placements. These programs also combat social isolation, improving mental well-being and quality of life. Losing funding for these services would have a devastating impact on many seniors who rely on them to age safely and with dignity in their communities. Affordable housing programs, which provide stable, secure housing for low-income seniors and formerly homeless individuals, are equally essential. At National Church Residences, we manage both affordable senior housing and Permanent Supportive Housing for vulnerable populations, including Veterans. These housing programs not only provide shelter but also offer vital services that enable individuals to thrive, reducing the risk of homelessness or institutionalization. Without continued federal investment, many of these housing options and services could be lost. I urge you to take immediate action to protect funding for Service Coordination and affordable housing programs in the upcoming budget. These initiatives are not just vital to the well-being of our most vulnerable citizens—they also save taxpayer dollars by preventing costly emergency healthcare and institutional care.
