Outdated rules have created barriers for nearly 8 million older adults and individuals with disabilities to save money, pushing them into poverty. The current Supplemental Security Income (SSI) asset limits of $2,000 for individuals and $3,000 for married couples are too low to allow for savings or emergency funds. The bipartisan SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act (S.2767/H.R.5408) aims to address this issue by raising these limits to $10,000 for individuals and $20,000 for married couples - the first update in over 30 years. This legislation would significantly improve the lives of SSI recipients by enabling them to build modest savings and achieve greater financial security without fear of losing critical benefits. As your constituent, I urge you to support this compassionate reform that upholds dignity and self-determination for our most vulnerable citizens.
