Demand Accountability for Russell Vought & the Politicization of Federal Funding
To: Sen. Schmitt, Sen. Hawley

June 15
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the actions of Russell Vought and the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to consolidate political control over federal funding and government institutions. Recent reports indicate that the Office of Management and Budget has proposed changes that would allow political appointees to exercise greater control over the distribution of federal grants, including funding for scientific research, public health programs, education, disaster relief, and community services. Critics across the scientific, public health, and nonprofit sectors have warned that these changes could subject funding decisions to political loyalty tests rather than merit, expertise, or the needs of the American people. Congress appropriates taxpayer dollars to serve the public interest, not to reward political allies or punish perceived opponents. Americans expect federal resources to be distributed fairly, transparently, and according to the law. Any effort to place ideological or partisan considerations above objective evaluation threatens public trust in government and undermines the constitutional balance of powers. I am also troubled by the broader pattern of actions associated with Mr. Vought’s leadership, including efforts to centralize executive authority and weaken independent institutions that exist to serve all Americans regardless of political affiliation. The federal government belongs to the people, not to any one president, political movement, or administration. I urge you to publicly oppose any proposal that would politicize federal grant making, undermine scientific independence, or allow taxpayer funds to be distributed based on ideological loyalty. I also ask that you support robust congressional oversight of the Office of Management and Budget and any actions that threaten the integrity of federal programs. Your constituents deserve to know where you stand. Silence in the face of these developments will be interpreted as acceptance. I expect my elected representatives to defend democratic institutions, protect the separation of powers, and ensure that federal funds are administered fairly and lawfully. At a time when many Americans are struggling with rising costs, housing affordability, healthcare expenses, and economic uncertainty, the last thing this country needs is a government that places political ideology above competent governance. We need leaders who will defend the Constitution, protect public institutions, and put the interests of the American people first. I respectfully request a response outlining your position on these matters and the actions you intend to take.
