I am writing to urge you to support the immediate impeachment of President Trump for conduct that threatens the annihilation of an entire civilization and constitutes an open threat to commit war crimes. On the morning of April 7, 2026, President Trump posted on Truth Social that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran does not agree to a deal by his 8 p.m. deadline . This was not an isolated remark. On Easter Sunday, he threatened to destroy Iran’s bridges and power plants , and on Monday he stated from the White House that “the entire country could be taken out in one night.” These are not the words of a commander in chief exercising strategic judgment. They are the words of a president openly promising to destroy civilian infrastructure serving 90 million people. Human rights experts, including the former executive director of Human Rights Watch, have stated that threatening collective punishment of a civilian population is itself a potential war crime under international humanitarian law and the Fourth Geneva Convention. Multiple nations have privately warned the administration against targeting civilian infrastructure, and the United Kingdom has refused to allow its bases to be used for operations against civilian targets. Members of both chambers, including Republican Senator Ron Johnson, have expressed that they do not want to see the U.S. destroy civilian infrastructure. Some members have already called for impeachment or invocation of the 25th Amendment. The President is waging this war without a congressional declaration or authorization, and his rhetoric has escalated to a point where the credible threat of civilizational destruction is being used as a negotiating tactic. The Constitution provides impeachment for exactly this kind of moment. A president who publicly threatens to extinguish an entire civilization, in defiance of international law, without congressional authorization, has demonstrated that he is unfit to hold the power of the office. I urge you to act before tonight’s deadline passes and these words become actions that cannot be undone.
