Protect libraries' freedom and core values - Oppose SB 2307

To: Rep. Stemen, Sen. Roers, Gov. Armstrong, Rep. Christy

From: A constituent in Horace, ND

March 3

Libraries play a crucial role in promoting literacy, intellectual freedom, and equal access to information for all members of our communities. Senate Bill 2307 poses a grave threat to these core values by enabling censorship and empowering the criminalization of library professionals. This misguided legislation undermines local control, strips decision-making authority from library boards and school districts, and opens the door to legal harassment through a vague definition of "sexually explicit" materials. Rather than addressing a non-existent problem, it creates a chilling effect that will force libraries to divert limited resources away from essential services. We must defend our public libraries as pillars of democracy and enrichment. I urge you to vote against SB 2307 and preserve the freedom to read and access information that is a fundamental right for all North Dakotans. Libraries foster intellectual curiosity, lifelong learning, and an informed citizenry – allowing this bill to move forward jeopardizes these vital functions that strengthen our society. Stand firm in protecting our libraries from unconstitutional overreach and unwarranted government intrusion into the reading choices of your constituents.
