I am deeply concerned about reports that USAID officials have been ordered to shred and burn classified documents without proper authorization from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). If true, this violates the Federal Records Act and risks obstructing multiple ongoing legal cases.
Regardless of political affiliation, government transparency and accountability must be upheld. The destruction of these documents could set a dangerous precedent—if agencies can bypass record-keeping laws without consequence, what stops future administrations from doing the same? This is not a partisan issue; it’s about maintaining the integrity of our government institutions.
I urge you to:
1. Call for an immediate congressional investigation into whether USAID’s actions violate federal law.
2. Demand that NARA intervene to preserve any remaining records before further destruction occurs.
3. Publicly affirm your commitment to transparency and government accountability by opposing unauthorized record destruction.
As your constituent, I want to know where you stand. Will you support an investigation into these actions? Your leadership on this issue will show that you stand for the rule of law and the preservation of critical government records—regardless of which party is in power.
I appreciate your time and look forward to your response.
