Urgent Need to Restore Checks and Balances in Government
To: Gov. Pritzker
From: A constituent in Chicago, IL
February 20, 2025
I am writing to express my deep concern and disappointment over the continued deterioration of our system of checks and balances, as well as the alarming lack of action from Congress in holding those in power accountable. The foundational principles of our democracy—separation of powers, oversight, and the rule of law—are under unprecedented strain, yet those elected to safeguard them have largely failed to act decisively.
Over recent years, we have witnessed a growing consolidation of executive power, blatant disregard for constitutional norms, and the erosion of legislative oversight. The unwillingness of Congress to effectively check executive overreach, investigate abuses of power, and push back against authoritarian tendencies has placed our democracy in peril. From politically motivated interference in federal agencies to the failure to hold leaders accountable for threats against our institutions, the inaction of our representatives has emboldened those who seek to undermine the democratic process.
This failure of accountability is not just a partisan issue; it is a fundamental threat to the stability of our nation. The Constitution grants Congress the authority and responsibility to act as a coequal branch of government, yet time and again, I have seen my representatives hesitate when strong leadership is most needed. Empty statements and symbolic gestures are not enough—what we need is real action.
I urge you to take a stand. Demand accountability from those who abuse their power. Strengthen legislative checks to prevent further erosion of our institutions. Protect the democratic values you swore to uphold. History will judge those who stood by as democracy faltered, and I hope you will choose to be on the right side.
I ask that you respond with the specific steps you are taking to restore balance and ensure that no leader is above the law. Your constituents deserve representatives who will fight for the integrity of our government.
