On June 14, 2025, during the massive “No Kings” protest in Los Angeles, demonstrators gathered peacefully in what was widely reported as a calm, orderly event. That changed when sheriff’s deputies on horseback began charging into the crowd, followed by the use of rubber bullets, flash-bang grenades, and tear gas. A live MSNBC reporter on site confirmed that law enforcement escalated the situation suddenly and violently.
There are also credible reports of people being trampled or struck by mounted officers, despite no clear threat from the crowd. These actions were dangerous, excessive, and unacceptable. Law enforcement exists to protect the public—not intimidate or harm peaceful demonstrators.
I urge you to support a full, independent investigation. Any sheriff’s deputies or officers who escalated violence without cause must be held accountable. Additionally, California should strengthen its use-of-force standards, particularly when it comes to protest response.
This protest was one of many across the country defending democracy and opposing authoritarian threats. The people of California have a right to protest safely. It’s your responsibility to protect that right. Investigate the police and sheriff departments that are escalating fear and promoting disaster.
