An Open Letter

To: Sen. Murkowski, Rep. Begich, Sen. Sullivan

The Clean Air Act has successfully reduced harmful air pollution for over 55 years, benefiting public health and the environment. However, the recent Senate vote aims to overturn an EPA rule that required major industrial facilities to maintain strict controls on emissions of seven hazardous air pollutants linked to serious health risks like cancer, birth defects, and brain damage. This rule provided a critical safeguard by preventing backsliding on emissions reductions. Overturning this common-sense regulation would allow thousands of facilities to increase emissions of toxic pollutants like mercury, dioxins, and PCBs that can have devastating impacts, especially on vulnerable populations like children. It disregards decades of progress in cleaning our air and prioritizes industry interests over public well-being. We urge you to defend the EPA's authority to enforce the Clean Air Act and protect Americans from hazardous air pollution that jeopardizes our health and the environment we all share.
