H.R. 625: REPORT Act

The REPORT Act, sponsored by Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-CA) and will be voted on the week of June 19, 2017. The act intends to improve the reporting that Congress receives upon completion of investigations into an incident of terrorism. The bill calls for coordination between the Secretary of Homeland Security, the Attorney General, the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the head of the National Counter Terrorism Center (NCTC).

As the threat of terror attacks in the U.S. remains high, and as incidents of “lone wolf” terror attacks seem to be increasing, Congress wants to improve the reporting they receive on these attacks. Congress currently receives briefings from the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. The REPORT Act seeks better and more timely reporting that will provide additional information, including after-action analysis and lessons learned. The new reporting format would identify weaknesses in national security and recommend additional measures to improve home security and prevent terrorist acts.
