State Rep. John Becker, R-Union Township, plans to introduce a bill that would immediately make all public health orders advisory instead of mandatory unless approved by lawmakers. The bill would apply to orders issued by state health department director Dr. Amy Acton in recent weeks to address the coronavirus pandemic as well as future orders.
Please oppose this bill. It’s short sighted and wrong. Becker’s views are not based in reality. He states that the “predictions did not pan out and the concerns were overblown.” That is extremely flawed thinking. The predictions came from the CDC and the whole point of the stay at home orders were to drastically reduce the numbers, which worked.
This is a medical crisis and we should rely on scientists and medical experts to guide the response to the pandemic, just like in a time of war, we rely on the the military experts. When lawmakers begin to make medical decisions based on politics, it hurts us all. I am a registered Democrat and I have greatly supported Governor DeWine’s response to this crisis of epic proportions. He has done the right thing by seeking guiding information from the medical experts. He is also starting to open things up now, so I’m not quite sure of the point of this legislation other than to distract and further divide us all. We should be coming together for the greater good, which this legislation would not accomplish.”
