We should all be saddened by the loss of a great American jurist, Ruth Bader Ginsberg yesterday. She was a trail blazer who set an example of what American exceptionalism really is. Now, you must grapple with the possibility of Pres Trump nominating a replacement when the country is less than 45 days from the next Presidential election. Your colleague Mitch McConnell made a spectacle out of refusing to even give Merrick Garland, President Obama’s nomination to replace Justice Scalia, the courtesy of an up or down vote in the Senate, let alone a committee hearing. He claimed that no new justice should be appointed when the country was “so close” to a Presidential election, yet, it was nearly a year away. The absolutely appalling hypocracy of Sen McConnell now rushing to approve a new Supreme Court nominee when the country is less than 45 days from a Presidential election is unbelievable. Please stiffen your spine and refuse to vote for any nominee until the results of the Presidential election are known. If Trump is reelected, then so be it, and he can make the appointment. As Mitch McConnell said in the case of Merrick Garland, “The American people should have a say in who gets to appoint the next Supreme Court nominee, and we’re too close to an election to confirm a replacement for Scalia.” Please don’t allow Mitch McConnell to make a mockery of his own words. Please allow the American people to decide who gets to appoint RBG’s replacement. It is the right thing to do. It is the honorable thing to do. It is the most American thing to do.
