Felony disenfranchisement disproportionally affects the Black community due to the systemic racism present in our justice system. It’s been demonstrated time and time again that Black people are policed and charged much more harshly compared to their white counterparts. As a result of this, many Black Americans can’t vote.
At this time, only Maine and Vermont allow unrestricted voting rights for felons. Voting restrictions vary from state to state, but in general most states bar felons from voting for a significant period of time.
This is voter suppression aided by systemic racism. The system, by design, silences Black voices in the election process.
We urge our state lawmakers to overturn laws that restrict voting rights for felons. While we can’t eliminate the systemic racism present in our society with the repealing of one single law, we can take a step closer to that goal by restoring their right to vote.
