I urge you to cosponsor the Senate version of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act (H.R.7120).
The legislation, which passed in the House in June, increases transparency and accountability in police departments, improves police training and practices, and addresses systemic racial discrimination. The need for this legislation to pass is urgent.
Now is the time to listen, learn, and advocate anew as we consider the disproportionate number of Black lives affected by hunger and poverty due to mass incarceration. Actively addressing unjust policing practices is critical to ending mass incarceration and achieving criminal justice reform.
Generations of Black lives, including most recently Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin, shot at least seven times in the back, have been tragically impacted by these unjust practices.
Please publicly call on your Senate colleagues to cosponsor the Senate bill and publicly demand that Senator McConnell bring the bill up for a vote.
I await your press release in support of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.
