Greetings. I am a voting constituent in rural west Texas.
Night 1 of the DNC convention. Did anyone have high expectations? I know I didn’t. But watching it, I felt something I hadn’t felt in almost 4 years...pride, hope, a connection with my fellow Americans.
I had forgotten what that felt like. It was wonderful.
The diversity of America was on full display. Extraordinary stories from ordinary folk. Coherent presentations from politicians that did not rely totally on falsehoods, mud slinging, and name calling.
For a few hours I felt like an adult listening to adults.
And at the same time, what do we get from the man who wants to continue to NOT lead the country?
“On a campaign swing in Minnesota, Trump made clear his message for the election. He repeatedly insisted that Biden “is the puppet of leftwing extremists,” who will “replace American freedom with leftwing fascism.” He harped again and again on the words “left wing” and “fascists.” He warned that America would face “crime, chaos, corruption and economic collapse” if he is not reelected, although of course that is precisely where we are with him in office.”
(Can’t wait to see the RNC. It’s bound to be a real festival of joy.)
Aren’t you sick of all this? Aren’t you ready to get back to some semblance of normalcy, back to a shared sense of governance?
We the People are starved for it. No wonder we had a collective weep watching last night.
I end with resonating words from a woman our country admires, and listens to.
“Let me be as honest and clear as I possibly can: Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country…. He is clearly in over his head. He cannot meet this moment. He simply cannot be who we need him to be for us. It is what it is.”
