I am extremely concerned about the state of voting rights in Pennsylvania.
The USPS has said that ballots cannot be effectively delivered on time following the state’s vote by mail election deadlines, and PA will not count ballots that arrive after Election Day even if postmarked on or before Election Day. You can mail your taxes in ON APRIL 15 - why is a postmark not valid for elections?
Furthermore, the delays in the postal system make voting by mail unreliable when voting in person poses COVID-19 risks. The trump administration is suing the state over ballot collection sites. Honestly I’m not even sure if my county election office will be open for me to drop off my ballot — who is to say with the way COVID May wind up going?
Finally, I voted by mail for the first time in the primary and was very surprised to see it did not have prepaid postage. Requiring voters to affix a stamp is akin to a poll tax (the illegal requirement to pay to participate in the election).
What will your office do to ensure effective, on-time, recognized and safe voting this fall?
