is time for Senate leadership to lead. There is no excuse for Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to call a multi-week vacation while millions of Americans struggle to make ends meet during a pandemic.
The Senate must pass meaningful COVID-19 relief that builds on the legislative priorities of the HEROES Act, which was passed by the House three months ago in mid-May.
The $600 increase in jobless benefits expired at the end of July. People in every state are being pushed closer to poverty as they struggle to pay for food, rent, and cover their basic monthly expenses.
Millions of Americans also need food assistance, an eviction moratorium, and rental assistance. Comprehensive COVID relief should also include $1 trillion in state and local aid to prevent millions more job layoffs and protect critical services, more cash aid to help families and the economy, and protecting Social Security and Medicare’s dedicated funding.
End the Senate recess, return to Washington, and work to pass essential COVID relief for millions of Americans.
While the Senate is on vacation, millions of Americans continue to suffer.
