I request that you heed the words of Superintendent Kathy Hoffman, who called on you in her statement of July 7 as follows:
"I welcome more aggressive action from Governor Ducey and our public health officials to help mitigate the virus’s spread. The reality of COVID-19 in Arizona means that reopening schools will be a community effort in which we all have a role to play. Stay home, maintain physical distancing, wash your hands, and wear a mask when you are in public. It is only with statewide action and personal responsibility that we will find a pathway forward for our students and educators to return to the classroom."
It is time for you to deal with the harsh realities of the exponential spread of COVID-19 in the State of Arizona and take swift and immediate action to protect our citizens. Not only should gyms, pools, bars, etc. be closed but all other areas/businesses where people gather in groups. The only way we will possibly have a safe path to reopening schools is to work together to implement meaningful restrictions that will slow the spread.
I also urge you to follow the gating criteria put forth by the White House and the CDC. Report the data correctly, not based on your politics. We need increased testing and funding for contact tracing.
Until all these criteria are met it is not safe to reopen schools.
I ask you to take a firm stand in favor of science, public health data, and the citizens you purport to serve in Arizona.
