THE GOP HAS TURNED FEALTY INTO A POLITICAL DEATH PACT. BUT WHY?

We the people were just given the definition of dereliction of duty by leadership to their constituents and country. At 4:00 a.m. Saturday morning, just before they left for a 5-week recess, Senate Republicans confirmed Acting AG Todd Blanche to the position of Attorney General of the United States. This makes President Donald J. Trump’s personal criminal lawyer the top law enforcement officer of the country. Reminder…the AG is supposed to be the lawyer for the people. But the senators cheered themselves with their wise decision… Chuck Grassley gushed enthusiastic about Blanche. “Mr. Blanche is a tough, fair prosecutor dedicated to ⁠the rule of law, and his leadership instills that same zeal throughout the entire Justice Department.” Other Republicans may have been less fanboy but said if they didn’t confirm Blanche, Trump would choose someone worse. And, fingers crossed, in a permanent rather than an acting capacity, they said, he would be more likely to resist Trump’s pressure. It’s not like they have power to use to stop the nomination proceeding. Amirite? So ousted foot soldiers Bill Cassidy, who spun his decision to fold on Blanche with lots of self-soothing BS, and John Cornyn, who gets to end his political career being tossed aside for Ken Paxton(!!!), did their final duty. Not to the country or constituents. But to the leader of the political party who ended their current careers. Way to repay loyalty huh guys? Remember way back when Republicans at least had enough political sense to do the right thing? Watergate? Today’s GOP would have just shrugged and moved on. Today’s GOP allowed Trump to be their party’s nominee even after 1/6. They allow Trump to continue to spread endless election lies about his 2020 loss and our election security. In fact, GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson babbles conspiratorial election-denial nonsense right along with Trump. They allow Trump to deport US citizens, children, spouses of our service members, anyone and everyone has been swept up in his opaque purge of ‘the worst of the worst.’ American citizens have been killed. Detainees have been killed. Fishing boats have been killed. Innocent children have been killed in a war they do nothing to control. They allow the administration to cut states that didn’t vote for Trump off from billions of dollars in federal funding. They watch while draconian state-level abortion bans killing their constituents are enacted. They vocally oppose any kind of diversity, even though that is what America is. They support and enable a one-religion ideology to be taught in our schools, destroying the separation of church and state. Texas, leader in all things extreme, is now requiring 5M public students to study Bible verses as part of normal curriculum. Top it off with science denialism while childhood diseases we had conquered come raging back. And we’re scared to eat lettuce. The list is endless and growing. But they want to talk about the Democrats being extreme. While we the people want to talk about high food prices, unaffordable rent and health care, anti-science rhetoric, cruel immigration policies and wanton governmental corruption by people we should be able to trust. But don’t. Because they keep showing us we shouldn’t.
