Today I take pen in hand to write and urge you to denounce publicly the vicious ICE assault on SEIU Union President David Huerta. The ICE thugs, masked of course, also injured Huerta, who required hospitalization. He was at the site of an ICE raid to observe and document the raid.
The recent detention and injury of SEIU California President David Huerta during an ICE raid in Los Angeles is a disturbing violation of civil liberties and an attack on the labor movement.
Their police state tactics are suspiciously timed and with their faces masked, it seems as if they are afraid of being recognized as perpetrators of borderline unlawful activity. We don’t really know how many of these alleged ICE Officers are real. They could simply be untrained bounty hunters, and mercenaries paid to beat up and intimidate immigrants AND those trying to uphold civil rights in these raids. This is not the first instance of these thugs actions.
As a community observer exercising his constitutional rights, Union President Huerta's mistreatment is unacceptable and emblematic of the cruel, indiscriminate enforcement actions of the Trump Administration, tearing families apart.
Immigrant workers are vital to our society and economy, yet they face unjust criminalization. This injustice must end.
I urge an immediate investigation into the excessive force used against Union President Huerta and a halt to these destructive ICE raids disrupting communities and harming all working people.
Upholding the rights of workers and immigrants is crucial for an ethical society that values human dignity over unjust policing.
I call upon your to help:
1. Ensure President Huerta's prompt release, and an apology from ICE and DHS’s leaders.
2. The identity of each ICE officer involved, with their records made public.
3. Continue to speak out against such abuses of power that in this an other cases target labor leaders and even members of Congress.
I’m sure you will hear from me about this again. They are not stopping. They are growing more violent. Thank you for your attention to this matter of 1st Amendment and Civil Rights.
