I am writing to you today as one of your constituents, one that, despite being a citizen, will be negatively impacted by the proposed legislation known as the SAVE Act. I am asking, nay begging, you to vote NO on the SAVE Act.
The basis of this legislation is that in some states, non-citizens are eligible to receive driver’s licenses and public assistance, and in some of those states, voter registration forms are provided during that process. This has been used by many Republicans to push the idea that non-citizens may have been provided voter registration forms in these states and therefore that non citizens are voting. The proven cases in which this occur are few and far between.
In the defense of this proposed act they seek to use fear and misinformation rather than logic and statistics. If a noncitizen does indeed go through the many steps to register to vote, including having their registration verified by a civil servant, does the proportion of voters for which this holds true even begin to make it worth making it harder for every day Americans to use their constitutionally protected right to vote?
I hope you, as my elected representative, do not fall prey to this rhetoric and instead consider that to truly make America Great, the right to vote must be protected, easy, and accessible. Anyone voting for this bill will have created a major issue with your constituents by hampering their right to vote.
What is your plan to protect American without a passport? What about people who have changed their name since birth, including most married women? How does this Act make sure there are no disenfranchised voters?
I am disappointed as a constituent that I have to write this email, I am angry as a citizen who is scared for their right to vote, and I am sad as a proud American that the country has come to this.
I am drawn to the conclusion that it is not the fear of non-citizens voting that encouraged this law, but potentially the interest in preventing women and transgender people from voting. At best, it is apathy towards the ability of these groups to vote. At worst, I hesitate to imagine what non-American principles might be the core motivation.
You need to stand up against these un-American principles and protect the right to vote. Say NO to the SAVE Act.
Sincerely,
